Swaps (USA), 1972

Error report

Swaps is best remembered as the Californian superstar, who won the Kentucky Derby in the famous battle against very popular Nashua, the champion two-year-old colt trained by Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons. The pair later met once more in no less famous match, which Swaps lost due to his injured hoof. However, people seem not to care that much about the fact Swaps also set no less than five world records and equaled another one; and neither about the fact that he sired three champions in his first two crops. In spite of that, his breeding career wasn't any much successful at first sight - but his influence arose during the decades.

Pedigree notes

How to put a life story of this colt? This is a tough question. Let's start at the moment when his breeder, Rex Ellsworth, reportedly wasn't able to get Nasrullah as a stallion he wanted; instead, he got the well-bred Khaled, son of Hyperion out of the Falmouth Stakes winner Eclair, and himself the winner of the Middle Park Stakes, the St. James's Palace Stakes and second from the Two Thousand Guineas. However, Khaled didn't perform well in the United States, and Ellsworth later used him as a stallion on his ranch in Chino. One of the members of a local band of broodmares was Iron Reward by Beau Pere, unplaced in 8 starts; being the first foal out of her mother, it was many years before people could finally say she was a half-sister to six winners, including stakes winner Trentonian, rival to Swaps himself, and the Kentucky Derby winner Iron Liege. Maybe more importantly, Iron Reward's dam Iron Maiden by War Admiral was the half-sister to Judy-Rae, also by Beau Pere, whose daughter Tulle by War Admiral produced great broodmare Courtly Dee - the dam of Althea and Twining and the granddam of Green Desert. Her family is still present in top American bloodlines, most recently in Raina da Batheria, Acoma or the Breeders' Cup Classic winner Bayern.

Bred mostly to Khaled, Iron Reward produced at least 8 full siblings, the oldest one being multiple winning filly Track Medal, who went on to produce successful handicap horse Tutankhamen and the Hopeful Stakes winner Outing Class. The latter became the damsire of Canadian great broodmare No Class. For the record, Track Medal's family also continues up to today; worth mentioning is the Forego Handicap G1 winner Midas Eyes. But back to history: Swaps was born two years later in 1952, followed by the Santa Catalina Handicap and the Caliente Handicap placed Like Magic, the Hollywood Lassie Stakes and the Hollywood Oaks placed Molly Maid, and the Del Mar Derby and the Cinema Handicap winner The Shoe. This was long before Iron Reward was found dead of starvation in Ellsworth's ranch in Chino; a thing which, together with his alleged coarse behavior towards horses including Swaps himself, shadowed the story of Swaps for many people.

Career

Swaps, despite having chronic problems with a hoof on his right forefoot, dominated spring trials in California and won the Kentucky Derby 1955 over heavily favored Nashua. He missed the remaining Triple Crown races because of his foot, but continued to show amazing performances in handicaps - only to lose desired "derby rematch" with Nashua, winner of the rest of the Triple Crown, later this year. Swaps had to take a rest, leaving Nashua with the Horse of the year honors; he returned the next year for the aforementioned six new or equaled world records, and finally received the Horse of the Year honors in 1956.

Swaps's story is well documented and was a motive for several books; however, some closer information is included in the Factbook section below.

At stud

Swaps began his stud career in Chino but was moved to Kentucky after the first season. His first crop of 1958 included Primonetta, the undefeated two-year-old filly, and winner of the Delaware Oaks, the Prioress Stakes and also the Alabama Stakes, where she defeated champion three-year-old filly Bowl of Flowers. Primonetta had to wait one more season before she was voted the champion mare too, after defeating such mares as Shirley Jones or Old Hat, a future double champion herself. Later she became the very successful dam of three G1 horses and also of Graustark colt named Grenzen, ancestor of classic winners Go And Go and Refuse to Bend, and also of champion Shared Belief and the Melbourne Cup winner Media Puzzle.

The season 1962 brought one more champion for Swaps, and it was great Affectionately, half-sister to Priceless Gem and one of the jewels of La Troienne's family. It's impossible to name all her great efforts, which included 28 victories from 52 starts, but she was the Turf & Sport Digest champion two-year-old filly, together with Smart Deb for Daily Racing Form, and at the age of five, she was not only respectable runner against males, but she was also voted the best sprinter in the country. Affectionately produced only four foals, including the champion and the champion three-year-old colt and the Horse of the Year Personality.

Chateaugay was a member of the same crop as Affectionately, but needed little more time before he matured into the Kentucky Derby winner, the Preakness Stakes second and the Belmont Stakes winner, and also the third from the Travers Stakes, which was followed by the inevitable title of the champion 3-year-old colt. Chateaugay wasn't any important sire, but he became damsire of both the Epsom Oaks and the Irish Oaks winner Fair Salinia, and of the Derby Stakes winner Henbit, and also left his mark in Japan in Tamamo Cross and the Tokyo Yushun winner Merry Nice.

However, the star career for Swaps, which could be expected after such a great start, never happened. No Robbery was only the Wood Memorial winner in 1963, Fall in Love placed in the Cheveley Park Stakes one year later, Fathers Image reminded Swaps in 1965 as a juvenile, running second to Buckpasser in the Arlington-Washington Futurity, and Fix the Date placed in the Prix Saint-Alary two years later. Lady Vi-e became the Kentucky Oaks winner in 1970 - a year in which Affectionately's son Personality earned the Horse of the year honors, but this was Swaps's swan song. He was breeding two more seasons after that but had no more important runners at all.

However, counting his daughters year by year gives a whole different picture.

As mentioned, Primonetta herself was the first great dam, including her daughter Cum Laude Laurie, multiple winner of future G1 races. Super Scope from the same crop produced stallion On Your Mark. 1959 brought Chandelle, the granddam of Roussalka and multiple classic winner Oh So Sharp, and also Pretty Pat, the ancestress of both Three Ring and Wicked Strong. Affectionately, born in 1960, produced Personality - the damsire of the Canadian Triple Crown winner Izvestia. Naila became the granddam of the Prix de Diane winner Harbour, and Sweet Clementine produced Best Turn - the sire of Davona Dale and Cox's Ridge, among others. Two more fillies of 1960 changed the thoroughbred world, as Ortalan became the ancestress of Toussaud - dam of four G1 horses including classic winner Empire Maker, grandsire of American Pharoah; Soaring got no less fame with her granddaughter Ballade, the dam of Devil's Bag and Saint Ballado, and the granddam of Rahy and Singspiel.

The one filly from the 1961 crop, who's worth mentioning, is Moll Flanders from the family of Zenyatta, whose granddaughter Mrs. Warren was a double G1 winner and the third from the Kentucky Oaks; 1962 brought Likely Swap, the granddam of Creme Fraiche and the third dam of Clear Mandate. Intriguing, born in 1964, became one of the superstars, as she became the granddam of Private Account and Woodman, and the ancestress of Rhythm and California Chrome's damsire Not For Love, among others. Twill from the same crop produced G1 sire Staff Writer. 1965 crop brought Director, the ancestress of Take Charge Lady; Lovely Morning - the granddam of Time For a Change and the Kentucky Oaks winner Dispute; and Perfecta, the granddam of the Poule d'Essai des Poulains winner and the Prix du Jockey Club second L'Emigrant. After a short period of 'only' random G1 horses, Change Water was born in 1969 - and became the dam of Fall Aspen and thus the ancestress of Timber Country, Dubai Millennium, classic winners Mehthaaf and Intello, stallions Charnwood Forest and Medaaly and many others. And another pause introduced Baracala, the last important daughter of Swaps - the granddam of Septieme Ciel and the third dam of Malibu Moon.

As for Swaps's sons, none of them was able to make any great success, but Black Beard, born in 1959, became the damsire of New Zealand G1 sire One Pound Sterling; Eurasian got a nice granddaughter in Social Lesson, dam of double classic-placed filly Top Socialite and Exbourne, who ran second between Nashwan and Danehill in the 1989 Two Thousand Guineas; she also produced G1 winner Expelled and became the granddam of popular gelding Affirmed Success, a multiple G1 winner who competed on the graded scene for seven years. Hail to Success is the ancestor of Australian multiple G1-winning filly Grand Archway, while Laramie Trail became the damsire of great Argentinian sire Not For Sale, who was, in fact, inbred to Swaps via his sire Parade Marshal. Chateaugay was mentioned already, and the last one missing is No Robbery, damsire of Buckaroo and Argentinian sire Parade Marshal, and of the famous trio of G1-winning half-siblings, Isopach, Estrapade and Criminal Type. The last one was voted the American Horse of the Year in 1990. And finally, No Roberry is also the third sire of the Kentucky Derby third and the Breeders' Cup Classic winner Cat Thief.

Long story short - we would miss a whole lot of great horses without Swaps, don't you think?
